001-199 General Knowledge
200-299 Religions
300-399 Social Sciences
400-499 Language
500-599 Sciences
600-699 Technology
700-799 The Arts
800-899 Literature
900-999 History/Geography

A dictionary will give a brief description of a word and also some useful keywords, an encyclopedia will give more information, perhaps enough for a poster but not enough for a longer essay. A book on the topic will help most for essays. Using the Internet is fine but always be aware that the source may not be so reliable and always quote all your sources.
